Masterly Inactivity
>> Saturday, January 1, 2000
Masterly Inactivity is an approach to a medical problem in which time is allowed to pass before medical intervention or therapy is used. During this time, repeated testing may be performed. Masterly Inactivity is an outpatient process and it may vary in a duration from months to years.
Masterly Inactivity is often recommended in situations with a high likelihood of self-resolution or in situations where there is high uncertainty concerning the diagnosis. It is also recommended in situations where the risks of intervention or therapy may outweigh the benefits.
Related terms include watchful waiting (WAW), expectant management and active surveillance.
