Cardiatis Neurovascular

Cardiatis, a privately owned Belgian company founded in 2002, is developing the Multilayer Aneurysm Repair System (MARS) for aneurysm treatment regardless of location.

The device is based on patented multilayer metal braiding technology and capitalizing on the hemodynamic flow modulation concept for treating aneurysms. The Multilayer Aneurysm Repair System three dimensional (3D) design allows for the fine tuning of both  intra-arterial and aneurysmal sac flow.

According to the company, the device reduces flow velocity within the aneurysm vortex while improving laminar flow in the main artery and surrounding vital branches.  This allows for pressure reduction within the aneurismal sac, stasis and the formation of an organized thrombus.

Proof of concept has been demonstrated in animal studies and in human popliteal and renal aneurysms. A first-in-man operation for repairing a thoraco-abdominal aneurysm was performed successfully in April 2008.

MARS received CE Mark approval for peripheral aneurysm indication in June 2009 and was subsequently launched on the European market.

Clinical trials for abdominal, thoracic and cerebral aneurysms are underway and an IDE for the aortic indication has been filed in the US.
